Breast Reduction

For women who desire smaller breasts, we can reduce the size of the breast and then reshape the smaller breast. Breast Reduction may be performed through the standard cutting techniques or with the newer soft tissue aspiration technique (liposuction breast reduction). Standard breast reduction has risks of scar and even loss of tissue because of decreased blood supply. This operation is not performed in smokers in our practice because of these risks. It is done under general anesthesia. However, it may give the very best results with lifting of the breasts in many patients, especially those with the largest breasts. It often requires an overnight hospitalization. Liposuction breast reduction is a newer technique that minimizes many of these risks. It virtually eliminates the scars. It may be done in our private surgery suite with a sedation type anesthesia. It will make the breasts smaller and less heavy but it gives only a minimal lift. We require patients over 30 to have a mammogram prior to breast reduction by any method. With the liposuction method, tissue can not be examined by examined by pathologists. Neither of these methods increase the risks of breast cancer. The type of breast reduction chosen is a personal decision that will be discussed with our staff.
