Body contouring after major weight loss is one of the newest areas of plastic surgery. It reduces excess fat and skin that has developed in multiple areas of the body. The result is a smoother, more attractive body contour. These procedures are often carried out in multiple stages. Circumferential lower body lifts correct sagging of the abdomen, buttocks, groin and outer thigh. This includes the abdominoplasty which removes the apron of skin which may be hanging over the pubic area. This surgery may be quite extensive and may require one or two days of hospitalization. Depending on the nature of the problem, insurance companies sometimes pay for removal of the skin apron but generally do not pay for other portions of the procedure. Breast lift may be needed to improve the appearance of the sagging skin. Brachioplasty is often performed for the excess skin of the upper arms. Facelift may be needed to reduce the excess skin of the face. Medial thigh lift may be performed for excess skin of the inner thigh but this is often one of the must frustrating procedures for the patient as it does not remove the skin above the knee which bothers many patients.

The results of body contouring after massive weight loss are long lasting if you maintain a stable weight. You must be prepared for the often extensive scarring with this type of surgery. The results, however, can be very dramatic and most patients are very satisfied.
